Rental Scams Are Everywhere
Scary truth: Up to 20% of "too good to be true" listings on Irish rental sites are scams. Fake landlords steal thousands from desperate house hunters every month.
You're vulnerable when you're desperate. Scammers know this and exploit it.
The Most Common Scams
Scam #1: The "Overseas Landlord"
How it works:
- Listing looks perfect, price is slightly below market
- "Landlord" says they're overseas (UK, Spain, etc.)
- Can't meet in person but will "mail you the keys"
- Asks for deposit + first month via Western Union/MoneyGram
Red flags:
- β Won't meet in person
- β Asks for money before viewing
- β Wants wire transfer (untraceable)
- β Email address doesn't match name
Scam #2: The Fake Viewing
How it works:
- Scammer shows you a real property (they don't own)
- Maybe broke in or has keys from previous rental
- Takes your deposit, disappears
- Real owner has no idea
Red flags:
- β Rushed viewing, pressures you to decide immediately
- β Won't provide proof of ownership
- β Asks for cash only
- β No written lease agreement
Scam #3: The Bait & Switch
How it works:
- Amazing photos of beautiful apartment
- When you arrive, it's a dump
- They pressure you to take it anyway ("other people interested!")
Red flags:
- β Photos look professionally staged
- β Won't do video call before viewing
- β Price seems too good
How to Protect Yourself
Golden Rules
- β ALWAYS demand proof of ownership (deed/property tax receipt)
- β ALWAYS get a written lease with RTB registration
